US Requests Pakistan to allow Khadija Shah Consular Access

During his weekly press conference, Patel was asked if the Biden administration was helping with the release of American individuals jailed after the May 9 rallies.

He said that the US stands ready to provide all appropriate assistance. We anticipate that Pakistani authorities will uphold the rights to a free and fair trial that are owed to these detainees, he said. When asked about US citizen and fashion designer Khadija Shah, who was imprisoned after the May 9 rallies, the representative indicated that the US was keeping track of her case and had “asked Pakistani officials for consular access to her.”

“As I’ve mentioned before, we always encourage foreign countries to permit and adhere to consular notifications and protocols when American people are arrested. We are still in direct contact with the Government of Pakistan about this since I think Ms. Shah has dual citizenship, he said. Patel insisted he had “nothing additional to report” regarding Shah’s access to consular services, though. Vedant responded that the “allegations” were “categorically false” when asked about former army leader General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa using the US to remove the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson.

You know I’ve said this before, but these claims are totally incorrect.” Politics in Pakistan are a matter for the people of Pakistan to decide and for them to pursue within the framework of their own Constitution and laws,” he said, adding that the US cherished its long-standing collaboration with Pakistan. He continued by stating that Washington saw a democratic and wealthy Pakistan as essential to US interests, which “remained unchanged.
