For the second time in US history, Muslims perform taraweeh prayers at New York Time Square. YouTube channel WayOfLifeSQ recently held another Taraweeh in Times Square event where all Muslims in New York gather to perform the taraweeh.
The YouTuber explains that taraweeh is a religious prayer for Muslims held in the month of Ramadan. They gathered there to show the world the beauty of the Quran and how beautiful it sounds. During Ramadan, it is advised to perform the Taraweeh prayers after the Isha (night) prayers. The complete Qur’an is often recited in mosques over the course of a month, usually by imams who have committed the Holy Book to memory.
The taraweeh prayers were held in New York Time Square for the first time in April of last year. For the first time ever, more than a thousand Muslims gathered in New York City night to say the Taraweeh prayers to mark the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan. Around 1,500 meals were provided for iftar to break the first fast of the month, which was promoted on social media. SQ, the social media personality who organized the event, told CBS, “Islam is a religion of peace.” He continued by saying that the goal was to explain the faith to anyone who was unsure of what it was all about.
He emphasized that for Muslims, fasting is not the only way to better comprehend how those who lack access to food feel. We’re truly doing this to get closer to and more aware of our Creator, our Lord, who is Allah.
Ali Camara, a co-organizer of the event, continued, “You work with these people [Muslims]. These people ride the train with you. We are all truly one. Several Muslims, however, voiced reluctance about performing the prayers on the busy road, citing security issues and inappropriate advertisements. According to a New Yorker, taraweeh is meant to be a private form of worship, according to Middle East Eye. Why this must be done in Times Square is beyond them and have they seen the billboard around them?
