Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, poked fun at the US government’s marijuana laws on Sunday by tweeting the most popular meme from Pakistan.
The meme featured Sarim Akhtar, a well-known Pakistani cricket supporter. When Asif Ali fumbled a catch during Pakistan vs. Australia’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 match, his look of regret went viral. Sarim’s image afterward served as inspiration for memes.
In the tweet, marijuana users in the US were shown as being depressed after going to jail. According to the meme the people in the US were imprisoned for marijuana use, while the government frees a women’s basketball star imprisoned for marijuana use by swapping a Russian war criminal. Maybe release some folks in jail for weed here too, Elon suggested in a tweet.

The meme was about Brittney Griner of the US Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), who was detained on February 17 at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after allegedly having hashish oil-infused vape cartridges discovered in her luggage. Her case is currently being heard in a Russian court. The Biden administration recently made a deal with Russia to free Griner and another imprisoned American, former US Marine Paul Whelan. The exact terms of the arrangement remain unknown, but according to The Guardian, Russia has reportedly expressed interest in freeing the two Americans in return for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is now serving a 25-year sentence in a US prison.
Netizens took to Twitter to share their thoughts. Twitter user @3YearLetterman tweeted that he vehemently disagrees with this. He is a young football legend who advises his team to use safe steroid injections to improve performance because they are far safer than marijuana. They shouldn’t all end up being losers who live in their aunt’s basement, in his opinion.
I disagree with this wholeheartedly Elon. I’m a youth football legend who encourages my players to get sensible steroid injections, which are much, much safer than weed and enhance performance. I don’t want them all to end up losers living in their aunt’s basement.

Another Twitter user @needmoreJJ jokingly stated that more has been done for Pakistani representation by Sarim Akhtar than by our entire government over the past ten years.

Twitter user @candoclemency tweeted that on this, she concurs with Elon Musk. POTUS, free Americans who are in jail for marijuana as well. We are still waiting even though you said you would do it throughout the campaign.
I agree with @elonmusk on this! Come on @POTUS – free people in America for weed also! After all, you promised to do so while on the campaign trail and yet…we're still waiting for #ClemencyNow #NoNeedtoNegotiate #HonorYourPromise @AnricaC @weldon_angelos @SLandP @Oslerguy https://t.co/9ed0aovVAV

Twitter user @yungneocon tweeted that given his wealth, influence, and access to influential people, Musk could be able to contribute to this idea instead of merely tweeting about it.
hmm given that Musk is rich, powerful and has the ears of the powerful, maybe he could actually contribute something to this notion rather than just tweeting about it. https://t.co/fIFVc5D6xO

Despite these state regulations, it’s still illegal to possess cannabis at the federal level. According to federal law, buying marijuana from a state-licensed retailer is criminal just as much as buying it from a narcotics dealer.
