For all the correct reasons, including the appalling living conditions the animals housed there endure, the federal and Sindh governments are considering permanently closing the Karachi Zoo.
Due to Noor Jehan’s rapidly declining health, an incident around the 17-year-old elephant was brought up earlier this month.
The animal received a successful operation last week, but due to a troubling worsening of her illness, she was unable to fully recover. There are many animals maintained at the wildlife park, and the elephant had developed a lot of medical issues as a result of months of subpar care and treatment.
Because of the public outcry and involvement of international organizations, Senator Sherry Rehman, the federal minister for climate change, has requested that the provincial government shutdown the Karachi Zoo. This is because the zoo is unable to provide for the needs of the wild animals.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has given consent to the idea to permanently close the wildlife park and move the wild animals and birds to safer places. A ministry source stated that the Sindh government “is likely to accept the proposal to close the Karachi Zoo after support from Bilawal Bhutto and Rehman.”
The professional suggestions to convert existing zoos into botanical gardens and centers for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals have been included in several plans, according to him. It is important to note that the deplorable living circumstances of wild animals at the Karachi Zoo have drawn criticism from wildlife specialists, who have called for its closure and the relocation of wild animals to sanctuaries.
