FIFA World Cup 2022: Cabinet Accepts the Qatar-Pakistan Army Security Agreement

The signing of an agreement between the state of Qatar and the Pakistan Army for the provision of security to the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022—the massive event being staged in Qatar and only 90 days away—was authorized by the federal cabinet on Monday.

Two members of the federal cabinet attest that the summary of the agreement was on the agenda for the cabinet meeting and that the ministers approved the signing of the agreement.

The agreement’s signature was proposed by the Joint Staff Headquarters (JSHQ), and neither the foreign ministry nor the Directorate General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) voiced any opposition to it before receiving the cabinet’s approval. The 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to take place in Qatar from November 21 through December 18, according to the summary for the cabinet, and the government of Qatar has asked for assistance with security-related issues for the tournament. It stated that the Joint JSHQ had suggested the signing of the agreement to validate security and management measures for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

According to the executive summary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate General of the ISI had no objections to the proposed agreement after it had been reviewed by the Law and Justice Division. The document stated that the agreement provides parameters for the deployment of troops for security assistance during the FIFA World Cup 2022. The agreement intends to specify the parties’ obligations, their respective areas of expertise, and the quantity of security personnel Pakistan will send to take part in the security and safety operations.

The summary states that the agreement between the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the State of Qatar, through the Ministry of Interior, is to be circulated and that the cabinet’s approval is required. It relates to secure coverage for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The defense minister reviewed the summary before approving its submission to the cabinet.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been invited by Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to visit the country on August 23 and 24, which falls shortly before the cabinet’s approval. Shehbaz would be making his first trip to Qatar since becoming prime minister in April of this year.

A significant portion of his government will be represented in the high-level delegation that will accompany the prime leader. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that Shehbaz would conduct extensive consultations with the Qatari leadership during the visit. The two sides will assess their whole range of bilateral connections, with an emphasis on improving energy-related cooperation, strengthening their commercial and investment links, and looking into expanding Pakistanis’ job options in Qatar.

The two nations would also discuss a variety of global and regional problems of shared interest. The prime minister will meet with prominent investors, businessmen, and entrepreneurs from Pakistan and Qatar while in Doha.
