Elon Musk Unveils xAI: A New Challenger Emerges in the AI Landscape, Setting Its Sights on OpenAI

The billionaire businessman Elon Musk unveiled the team of engineers from the same major American technology companies on Wednesday when he officially launched his long-teased artificial intelligence startup xAI.

Musk is attempting to develop a ChatGPT rival. Musk, who is already the CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla (TSLA.O), CEO of rocket launch business SpaceX, and owner of Twitter, will serve as the startup’s CEO. Musk has stated numerous times that the development of AI should be put on hold and that the industry requires control. Regarding AI’s potential to “destroy civilizations,” Musk has expressed his fears on numerous occasions.

Musk detailed his strategy for developing a more secure AI during a Twitter Spaces event on Wednesday night. He stated that xAI would aim to develop a “maximally curious” AI as opposed to expressly encoding morality into its AI. According to Musk, “The best thing I can think of from an AI safety standpoint is if it tried to understand the true nature of the universe.” “I think it will be pro-humanity because humanity is just so much more interesting than not-humanity,” said the speaker. Superintelligence, or AI that is smarter than humans, will likely materialize in the next five to six years, according to Musk. The organization that created ChatGPT, OpenAI, was co-founded by Musk in 2015.

However, he left the board of directors in 2018. OpenAI has the support of Microsoft. A Twitter Spaces event is scheduled for July 14 according to the xAI website. Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at Google’s DeepMind, Tony Wu, a former employee of Google, Christian Szegedy, a former research scientist at Google, and Greg Yang, a former employee of Microsoft, make up the xAI team. According to a state document, Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp in March that was incorporated in Nevada. Musk is listed as the company’s sole director while Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, is listed as the secretary. To compete with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) Bing AI, which seeks to grasp the nature of the cosmos, Musk had said in April that he will release TruthGPT or a maximal truth-seeking AI.

Before the release of Bard and Bing AI, OpenAI’s debut of the well-known chatbot ChatGPT in November of last year brought generative AI to the public’s attention. The xAI team will receive guidance from Dan Hendrycks, who serves as the Centre for AI Safety’s director and focuses on the dangers of AI.

Despite being independent of X Corp, Musk’s new business will collaborate closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other businesses, the website claims. According to xAI, the San Francisco Bay Area requires skilled engineers and researchers. Anna Tong in San Francisco and Akash Sriram, Chavi Mehta, Yuvraj Malik, and Aditya Soni reported from Bengaluru. Shailesh Kuber and Leslie Adler edited the work.
