Unveiling Pakistan’s Inaugural Music Policy: A Brief Guide

This week, Marriyum Aurangzeb, a former Minister of Information, introduced Pakistan’s inaugural music policy.

The policy aims to safeguard and endorse the nation’s cultural heritage by offering legal protection for original works created by local artists. Pakistan boasts a remarkable and diverse musical legacy, encompassing various genres and traditions, such as classical music, qawwali, ghazals, and folk songs. Instruments like the sitar and rabab, which Pakistani musicians have used to produce mesmerizing melodies and rhythms, have garnered praise from around the world for their use by the country’s artists.

Before concluding her tenure as the Minister of Information, Aurangzeb stated on the messaging app X, “I am delighted to have launched Pakistan’s first-ever music policy.” She disclosed that the policy was approved during the final meeting of the outgoing federal cabinet on August 9, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. She further elaborated that this strategy would not only support the current music industry of the country but also provide legal protection to the creations of Pakistani musicians. She expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the creation of this historic policy, especially the officials from the information ministry, attorneys, and artists.

Aurangzeb continued to express her appreciation to PM Sharif and his federal cabinet for accepting and bringing the policy to fruition. Additionally, in April of this year, the former Minister of Information also introduced PTV Flix, a new over-the-top (OTT) platform for global viewers. This platform enables people to access programming on their televisions and mobile phones through the state-owned television channel.”
