Unprecedented Heatwave Set to Break Records

Several Pakistani and Indian border cities are experiencing an unusual heatwave, with April temperatures projected to reach 50 degrees Celsius in the following days.

Extreme temperatures are threatening not only the health of millions of people but also the wheat crop in the region.

A heat dome has formed over the region this week, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, similar to the one that drove temperatures to rise across the Pacific Northwest last year.

On Tuesday, Pakistan was hotter than half of the world, with temperatures reaching 47 degrees Celsius in Dadu, Sindh’s 11th largest city.

As a result of the heatwave, which, according to the US Storm Watch (USW), is intensifying in bordering countries, the city experienced its warmest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere so far in 2022.

According to the USW, the region’s temperature will continue to rise, and the possibly dangerous heatwave will endure until the end of the month.

Pakistan and India have been experiencing record heat since March, and the situation is only expected to deteriorate. The US Storm Watch says that national record highs could be threatened if temperatures hit 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Severe heatwaves aren’t typical in the region until May and June, but experts have long expected that, as a result of climate change, they’ll grow more regularly even before and after those months in the coming decades.
