From Turkey to Türkiye: UN okays Ankara’s request to change name

Following a request from Ankara, the United Nations has altered the name of the Republic of Turkey’s country within the organisation from “Turkey” to “Türkiye.”

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu wrote to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, requesting that “Türkiye” be used instead of “Turkey” in all matters.

According to the spokeswoman, the country name change took effect as soon as the letter was received.

On Tuesday, Cavusoglu said that the letter had been officially submitted to the UN and other international organisations.

We have been successful in building a good platform for this with our Directorate of Communications, according to the letter.

Cavusoglu told Anadolu Agency that the UN and other international organisations, as well as countries, had been able to see the switch to ‘Türkiye.’ Turkey began the transition to Türkiye as its internationally recognised official name in English in December, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a memorandum requesting that the public adopt Türkiye to describe the country in all languages.

Erdogan stated at the time that “Turkiye is recognised as an umbrella brand for our country in national and international settings.” Türkiye is the most accurate depiction and expression of Turkish culture, civilisation, and ideals.

Erdogan also recommended businesses label their exported items with “made in Türkiye” and told government entities to use Türkiye in their communications.
