A tropical cyclone may be developing over the Southeast Arabian Sea, according to a warning from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The weather service stated in a notice posted on its website by the PMD that “the low-pressure area (LPA) over Southeast Arabian Sea has intensified into a Depression (strong LPA) and lies near Latitude 11.5 N & Longitude 66.0 E about 1500km south of Karachi.” The system is projected to intensify further into a tropical storm during the next 18 to 24 hours, according to the report, which also noted that sea surface temperatures of 30-31°C, minimal vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence have created “favorable” environmental conditions.
The statement also predicted that the storm would continue to move farther north and northwest. The statement also noted that none of Pakistan’s coastal regions are currently in danger. However, the PMD’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is keeping an eye on the system and will provide an update as needed. All relevant authorities were also cautioned to remain “alert” throughout the anticipated period by the notification. Additionally, it is strongly suggested that all involved authorities exercise caution during the forecasted period.
Bangladesh proposed the name Biparjoy for the tropical cyclone, which means “disaster or calamity”.
The majority of cyclones in the Arabian Sea turn towards Oman or Indian Gujarat owing to upper-level divergence, according to Sindh’s Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO), Sardar Sarfaraz, although an exact forecast can be made until the cyclone advances 20 degrees north, The News said. He continued by saying that Biparjouy’s movements were being constantly watched. The cyclonic storm is expected to become an SCS by Thursday morning and a very severe cyclonic storm by Friday evening, according to the Indian meteorological agency.
