Heavy Rainfall: PMD Launches Monsoon Emergency Hotline

To respond to any emergencies that may arise during the monsoon season, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has established an emergency helpline 16.

During the present monsoon season, Section 144 is being enforced close to rivers and dams. Dr. Zaheer Ahmed Babar, a spokesman for the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), declared that emergency helpline number 16 was now operational.

He said that any incident that occurred during the rains may be reported to the civil administration and that the helpline would be open 24 hours a day. He continued that the caller will simply need to ring 16 and it will be sent to the relevant agency for flood emergency response.

Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sargodha, Hafizabad, M. B Din, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jhang, Okara, Sahiwal, and Bahawalnagar will be facing with rain- windstorms, and thundershowers as a result of the ongoing monsoon system, the Met department predicted.

From July 5 to July 7, rain-wind-thundershower conditions (with sporadic heavy rainfall) are predicted for Zhob, Ziarat, Barkhan, Loralai, Kohlu, Quetta, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Naseerabad, Sibbi, Panjgur, Turbat, Pasni, Gwadar, Dadu, Karachi, Thatta, Ormara, Kech, Awaran, Kharan, Mirpurkhas, Badin, and Karachi.

He cautioned tourists and commuters to exercise additional caution throughout the forecasted period. All relevant ministries have previously been instructed by the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to educate the public about urban floods and how to prevent it. He said that they were all perfectly equipped to handle any emergency.

 

Similarly, the Karachi Traffic Police have established an emergency helpline (1915) for city residents who become stranded in the downpour during the current monsoon spell. Details indicate that the Traffic police have started offering free auto repair services to Karachi residents to aid locals during the rainy season and preserve traffic flow. The Karachi traffic police’s specialized trucks are equipped with mechanic capabilities including tire repair, tire inflation, car towing, and other essential tools like fire extinguishers.

In the meantime, as monsoon rains continue in Karachi and other parts of Sindh, a weather authority has issued a warning regarding urban flooding in low-lying regions of Karachi. Some regions of the port city are expected to receive 50millimeters of rain, according to chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz.

Sarfaraz has issued a warning regarding urban flooding in certain areas of the city, saying that the city would continue to see sporadic rains and thunderstorms today. The present monsoon system will continue to affect the area through July 9, according to the meteorological authority.
