Top Gear Hits the Brakes: BBC Announces Indefinite Hiatus for the Foreseeable Future

The BBC announced that the British edition of their hugely famous car show, ‘Top Gear,’ will not be coming back for some time due to an incident in December that seriously injured presenter Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff.

Following the filming mishap, which happened in March, the BBC announced that it had chosen to stop production. The statement from the BBC on Tuesday read, ‘The UK show has been put on hold for the foreseeable future due to the extraordinary circumstances. The decision to pause the show is morally correct, even if we are aware that viewers will be disappointed.’

According to a BBC statement, the hiatus will not impact any other Top Gear activities, including international formats, digital content, magazines, and licensing. Flintoff, aged 45, a former English cricketer turned ‘Top Gear’ host in 2019, was reportedly fortunate to survive a December accident at Top Gear’s test track in southern England. According to The Sun newspaper’s report last month, his injuries were described by his legal team as ‘life-altering and significant.’ A settlement amounting to £9 million ($11.21 million) was reached over the accident with the BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Studios, as per The Sun’s report.

Notably, Flintoff recently assumed the role of head coach for an English cricket franchise, and in September, he took on an unofficial coaching position with the England team. In the months after the disaster, the show underwent a safety evaluation. According to the BBC report, the assessment revealed that by following best practices, significant insights were acquired. These lessons will be fully incorporated into the program’s future development. The network, expressing remorse to Flintoff, affirmed its continued commitment to collaborating with the former cricket player and his two co-presenters on upcoming projects.
