Tennis icon Roger Federer Announces his last serve

Roger Federer announced his retirement from the ATP Tour and the major slams the week before the Laver Cup in London.

I said I was 41 years old. I’ve played in nearly 1500 games over the last 24 years. The 20-time grand slam champion said on Instagram that tennis had been more generous to him than he could have ever anticipated. Now he must decide whether to end his professional career. The last time Federer played in a competitive match, he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinal. As a result, he underwent two knee surgeries in 2020 and another following that defeat.

I’ve experienced challenges over the past three years as a result of operations and injuries, as many of you are aware, he said. “I’ve worked hard to get back into excellent competition shape. My body has been talking with me lately, and I am conscious of its potential and limitations. While fighting against 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, Federer dominated men’s tennis over the past two decades. Federer continued, “I also want to congratulate my on-court rivals. I was fortunate enough to take part in a lot of noteworthy matches. We fought hard and fairly, and I always tried to respect the history of the game. I’m grateful beyond words.

Despite playing against two of the greatest players ever, Federer has shattered countless records. He was the oldest world No. 1 at age 36 and held the position for a record 237 consecutive weeks. Among his other achievements, Federer’s career grand slam triumphs include the Australian Open, which he won six times, the French Open, which he won once, the US Open, which he won five times, and Wimbledon, which he won an unheard-of eight times. In addition, he achieved the second-most victories during the Open era after Jimmy Connors by winning a record six ATP finals, 103 ATP titles, the Davis Cup, and the men’s doubles gold medal at the 2008 Olympics with Stan Wawrinka.

Federer’s announcement of his retirement comes one month after Serena Williams declared her intention to “evolve away” from the sport, bringing to an end era in which both players had an impact on both men’s and women’s tennis. Williams played in the highly anticipated championship game at the US Open, where she also earned her first grand slam triumph. Federer, though, claimed that he had no such firm ambitions when speaking to CNN’s Christina Macfarlane in 2019.

The Laver Cup, a competition he helped design in which six players from Europe take on six players from the rest of the world, will mark the end of Federer’s career. Federer missed Wimbledon’s main draw this year for the first time since 1998 due to injuries.
