Telecom Giant Faces Controversy: Allegations of Gas Theft to Power Phone Towers

In Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a major gas pipeline, and a multinational mobile phone firm with operations in Pakistan were caught in the act of stealing gas.

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) asserted in a First Information Report (FIR) that the distributor had carried out a significant crackdown on gas thieves at the command of the federal government.

In the district of Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the company’s regional team stormed a mobile phone tower. During the inspection, it was discovered that the generator for the tower was powered by an unauthorized gas hookup, according to an SNGPL official.

The tower is operated by Jazz, as stated in the FIR. A 200-foot pipe was being used by the staff member stationed at the tower to siphon gas from the primary 8-inch gas line. Consequently, the SNGPL team seized the generator, pipe, and other gas theft-related tools. The personnel of the telecom business are the subject of an FIR that was also filed by the gas distributor. As per a statement from a Jazz representative in conversation with ProPakistani, Jazz fully adheres to all relevant regulations and conducts its network operations throughout the country following legally sanctioned electricity and fuel agreements. For this reason, Jazz has established contracts with independent providers for the fueling of generators at locations as a standby power solution.

Furthermore, Jazz vehemently denies any such claims and has no natural gas-powered sites in Pakistan. The business has launched an internal inquiry in the interim to learn more specifics about the in question location, and will take appropriate action as needed.”A multinational firm that has spent more than $10.5 billion in the nation will be held to the highest standards of honesty,” he continued. “And any efforts to tarnish its reputation via baseless charges will be regarded very severely.”
