Tensions escalated at a protest in Malmo, Sweden on Sunday, where the Holy Quran was set on fire. This event led to the detention of two individuals and the arrest of two others.
Salwan Momika, an Islamophobic Iraqi refugee, organized the demonstration, which took place in Malmo’s main square. Approximately 200 people gathered to witness the desecration of the Holy Quran. His malicious actions not only caused outrage in Sweden but also stirred controversy in the Middle East and among Muslim nations.
A “violent riot” erupted at 1:45 PM (Swedish local time), described by the Swedish Police as taking place in a tense environment. After Momika left, the main event concluded, but some spectators remained, resulting in arrests and detentions. According to eyewitness statements and camera footage, attendees threw rocks at Momika. One man even attempted to block a police car transporting Momika, while others tried to scale police barriers.
Momika’s actions have led to diplomatic tensions between Sweden and several Middle Eastern nations, in addition to the local uproar caused by his deeds. In July, protesters stormed the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad twice following similar demonstrations. Despite the controversy, the Swedish government has reaffirmed its support for the right to free speech while simultaneously condemning any disrespect towards the Holy Quran.
