An early-morning failure caused a research rocket from Sweden Space Corp (SSC) to fall into neighboring Norway at a distance of 15 km (9.32 miles) after being launched from the northern Sweden space center at Esrange.
In a statement, the agency said that experiments were carried out in zero gravity while the rocket soared to a height of 250 kilometers (155.34 miles). The SSC’s chief of communications, Philip Ohlsson, told Reuters that the plane “landed in the mountains at 1,000 meters altitude and 10 kilometers from the closest settlement.”
The Swedish and Norwegian governments, as well as other parties, may be notified when anything goes wrong, according to him, and there are processes in place for doing so. According to the agency, attempts to retrieve the cargo are already underway, and a probe has been launched to identify the technical causes of the flight’s unusual course. By email, a representative for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that “the Norwegian authorities take any unauthorized activity on the Norwegian side of the border very seriously.” The spokesman noted that in the event of any border violations, the responsible parties should immediately contact the relevant Norwegian authorities, including the foreign ministry, through the right means.
She said that no formal notification of the incident to the ministry had been made by the Swedish authorities.

According to the spokesman, any operation to rescue any wreckage on Norwegian land also required prior consent. The SSC spokesperson said that the rocket fell far from any populated areas, while the Norwegian Foreign Ministry claimed that it was not aware of any environmental damage. The Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority was unresponsive when asked for comment.
