Surprise and Disappointment: Wasim Akram Reacts to Cricket Tribute Video Excluding the Legendary Imran Khan

To commemorate Pakistan’s Independence Day, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video on X (previously known as Twitter), honoring the rich history of Pakistan cricket.

The PCB’s tweet accompanied the video, emphasizing that crafting history involves more than just a single day; it’s about the enduring heroes we generate and the stories we compose. The video paid homage to the Pakistan Cricket Team, highlighting their lasting legacy. Strikingly, the video only briefly featured former Pakistani cricket captain, Imran Khan, almost too quick to catch. The observation of this particular aspect was made by sports reporter Faizan Lakhani, who described it as a “bareek kaam.”

However, since the video was uploaded, the PCB has faced criticism. Wasim Akram, a former captain of the cricket team and one of the finest fast bowlers ever, criticized the PCB in a tweet. As he watched the PCB’s brief documentary detailing the past of Pakistan’s cricket, he was surprised to see that the iconic figure of Imran Khan had been left out.

Having undertaken extensive journeys and enduring prolonged layovers to reach Sri Lanka, he believes it’s important to overlook any political differences. Imran Khan remains an iconic figure in cricket, having played a crucial role in shaping Pakistan into a strong team during his time, offering us a clear path forward, Wasim Akram expressed his thoughts on platform X (previously referred to as Twitter), conveyed that the PCB should consider removing the video and expressing regret for the oversight.

Wahab Riaz, a former fast bowler and temporary sports minister, also voiced his criticism of the PCB in a press briefing. “We will undoubtedly retain the memory of the 1992 World Cup and its captain perpetually. Our admiration for him [Khan] has remained constant, and I have faith that the younger generation will also hold their own heroes in high esteem,” expressed Wahab Riaz.

In the annals of Pakistan’s cricket history, Imran Khan is considered one of the greatest and most recognizable players. Khan represented Pakistan in 175 ODIs and 88 Test matches. Furthermore, under Khan’s captaincy, Pakistan clinched the 1992 World Cup and secured its inaugural series victory in England in 1987. “Imran Khan will be remembered as one of the giants of the international game,” wrote Urooj Mumtaz Khan, a former captain of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, taking a swipe at the PCB.
