State files appeal against acquittal of Qandeel Baloch’s brother

The government has appealed in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of Qandeel Baloch’s brother in the honor killing of Qandeel, according to Parliamentary Secretary for Law Maleeka Bokhari.

Maleeka noted on her official Twitter account that the Supreme Court had the potential to make a significant “presumption in cases of such heinous murder.”

She went on to say that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf government remained determined to protect women’s and girls’ rights.

After witnesses strayed from their testimony in the trial court and Qandeel’s parents submitted a reconciliation deal requiring parental pardon, the LHC’s Multan bench annulled the accused’s life sentence on February 14.

In the name of honour, Waseem was accused of strangling his sister. He was detained in July 2016 and sentenced to life in prison by a Multan court on September 27, 2019. Waseem acknowledged strangling his 26-year-old sister because of her social media activities at a press appearance in 2016.

Maleeka had previously stated that the murder of innocent women under “the false pretext of honour” and decisions that “disregard evidence and are premised on the weak understanding of the constitution cannot be allowed,” in response to the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) acquittal of the prime suspect and brother of Qandeel Baloch in her murder case.
