Snowboard Shop Discontinues Selling Electric Skateboards Following Four Fatalities

Following the deaths of four individuals while using them, all Onewheel electric skateboards will be recalled globally.

According to the US watchdog, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), all 300,000 of the devices marketed in the US have been recalled due to the possibility of crashes leading to fatalities. This recall affects all consumers, not just those in the US, according to Future Motion, the company that manufactures Onewheels. The UK government’s representative told the BBC that inquiries would be made, and if necessary, they would “react swiftly.”

Future Motion stated that UK customers can check their options on its website, which may range from a software update to a $100 (£82) shop credit, depending on the brand and type of skateboard. Requests for recalls must be made using a link on Future Motion’s website. The CPSC mentioned in the recall notice that there were four recorded deaths involving Onewheels between 2019 and 2021, in addition to serious injuries such as traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, upper-body fractures, lower-body fractures, and ligament damage.

The watchdog reported that the four fatalities were caused by head trauma, and at least three of these incidents involved riders who were not wearing helmets, according to the reports. Both Future Motion and the CPSC encourage wearing safety gear such as helmets and knee pads while riding. The company is currently facing 31 claims in the US brought by individuals who allege that they fell because the Onewheel stopped or switched off unexpectedly, according to a legal document filed by the company in September.

According to the documents, there has been no previous legal precedent involving electric skateboards in court. The recall applies to all variations of Onewheel electric skateboards, including the original Onewheel, as well as the Onewheel+, Onewheel+ XR, Onewheel Pint, Onewheel Pint X, and Onewheel GT models. While it is permissible to purchase electric-powered devices such as e-skateboards and e-scooters for use on private property, current laws prohibit the use of privately owned devices on public roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
