Slain Islamia College University Peshawar Professor laid to rest

A security guard killed a professor at the famous Islamia College University (ICU) due to a minor disagreement.

The university staff, however, were unable to verify contradicting claims that the accused and the deceased engaged in a series of tense exchanges regarding various minor matters. Bashir Ahmed, a local of Tordher in the Mardan district, was recognized as the instructor who was killed.

A representative of the Campus police station said that he was employed by the university as a lecturer in the English department. The security guard, Sher Mohammad, a Peshawar resident from the Sarband neighborhood, was the subject of a police complaint.

Dawn was informed by an ICU representative that the teacher and security guard had a heated dispute just prior to the incident. A month prior, the security guard and teacher also got into a heated argument over an unclear matter. Following a heated argument, the university’s teachers went to the director of security and requested that the security guard be changed in order to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

The security guard was assigned to Islamia Collegiate School, an ICU constituent institution, after being transferred from the university by the administration. But when several senior professors stepped in, the conflict was settled amicably.

Dawn was informed by an ICU professor that the dead teacher used to go to the university’s grounds on the weekends and kill birds with an air gun. He was using his air gun to hunt birds on Sunday when he came across the security guard. Dawn was informed by a university employee that the teacher’s murder was the result of another heated dispute between the two of them.

The employee, who had seen the CCTV footage of the incident, claimed that the security officer shot the teacher with his gun and murdered him there and then. According to a representative of the campus police station, the event happened directly at the entrance to Islamia Collegiate. He claimed that after the accused managed to flee, a case was brought against him.

The management shut the institution under the guise of spring break, which typically begins in the final week of February, in order to prevent more disturbance. An announcement made following the incident stated, “It is notified for the knowledge of all concerned that Islamia College Peshawar and its constituent colleges shall observe spring holidays with effect from February 20 to March 25.”

All co-curricular and extracurricular events, including tests and interviews, were postponed, and new dates would be set in accordance with that, it stated. In a statement posted here, the Teaching Staff Association of Islamia College University strongly criticized the security guard’s murder of the teaching member.
