Sir David was knighted by the Queen in 1985, but he has now been promoted to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, a more prestigious honour, in recognition of his environmental documentaries and campaigns.
At an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, the 96-year-old national treasure was granted the honour by the Prince of Wales, who is a devoted environmentalist.
During the Jubilee weekend, a part of the Platinum Party at the Palace outside Buckingham Palace included the beloved broadcaster, who is the same age as the Queen.
During this segment of the show, the Duke of Cambridge praised the efforts of “visionary environmentalists,” with a video of Sir David projected over Buckingham Palace.
Prince William also expressed his admiration for “my grandfather and father,” the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles, who have promoted environmental causes. Sir David was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, joining Pope Francis and the World Health Organization on the list of nominees this year.
