Singapore executes mentally challenged Malaysian man

Despite requests for clemency from around the world noting his bad mental health, officials in Singapore killed a mentally challenged Malaysian national convicted of narcotics trafficking.

Nagaenthran Dharmalingam was caught smuggling 42.72 grams of heroin into Singapore on his thigh in April 2009 and condemned to death the following year.

On Tuesday, a Singapore court dismissed Nagaenthran’s mother’s legal challenge, paving the way for Nagaenthran’s hanging.

Dharmalingam and his family wept as they reached through a breach in a glass screen to tightly grip each other’s hands at the conclusion of Tuesday’s hearing. His shouts of “mom” reverberated throughout the courtroom.

The authorities in Singapore rarely remark on executions.

On Monday, some 300 people gathered in a Singapore park for a candlelight vigil to protest the planned hanging.

Dharmalingam’s execution was confirmed by Changi jail officials to his brother Navin Kumar. Mr Kumar was also in the prison to make arrangements for Dharmalingam’s remains to be transported back to his family’s home in Ipoh, Malaysia, for the funeral and last rites.

“On this count, may I declare that Malaysia is far more humane,” his sister Sarmila Dharmalingam stated. Singapore gets a zero.”

After a two-year hiatus, Singapore executed its second drug-trafficking inmate in less than a month.
