Supreme Court clears Shahrukh Jatoi and Cronies in Shahzeb Murder Case

Shahrukh Jatoi and his alleged cohorts in the “Shahzeb Murder Case” were both released by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Ijazul Ahsan made up the three-judge panel that heard the case.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) handed down the death penalty to Jatoi and his accomplice Siraj Ali Talpur for the murder of Shahzeb in 2012 over a small argument. Both the domestic helper Ghulam Murtaza Lashari and Siraj’s younger brother Sajjad Ali Talpur were given life sentences. But a few months after the verdict was handed down, Shahzeb’s parents officially pardoned the defendants, and the Sindh High Court granted their request (SHC).

The death penalty had been enforced notwithstanding the pardon since terrorist charges had been added to the case; however, this was before the SHC dropped the charges and ordered a fresh trial. The SHC later remitted the death sentence to life in prison while reviewing appeals against the conviction. All four defendants then went to the Supreme Court. The formal pardon has already been granted, according to their attorney Latif Khosa, who made the statement in court today. He claimed that his clients were uninterested in sowing fear. The court subsequently declared all four defendants innocent. A thorough order is anticipated.

Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old resident of the Defence Housing Authority in Karachi, was shot and killed on December 24, 2012. He was a police officer’s son. He and his sister were on their way back from a wedding. Due to an encounter he had with one of the suspects’ servants after the servant verbally abused and tormented his sister, Shahzeb was killed. The chief justice was then made aware of the incident suo motu after it sparked a great deal of outrage across the country via newspapers, TV networks, and social media. Because the main suspect came from one of Sindh’s most prominent aristocratic families, the incident led to a national discussion over whether the ruling class of the nation could be held accountable for the atrocities it committed.
