Saudi Crown Prince Performs the Kaabah Washing Ritual

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense had the distinction of washing the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, on behalf of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman performed the honor.

Crown Prince Mohammed was greeted by Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudais, General President of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque, together with Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal.

The Crown Prince entered the Kaaba to carry out the custom of cleaning the Holy Kaaba after performing Tawaf and the subsequent prayer. An occasion that dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad is the Kabah Washing Ceremony (PBUH). According to some stories, the Prophet (PBUH) once or twice a year washed the Kabah. First in Muharram and the second just before the start of Ramadan. The Government of the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques maintains the Prophet’s (PBUH) Sunnah year after year by adhering to the same custom.

The General Presidency’s appointed members produce the cleaning solution used to clean the Holy Kabah the day before the ceremony. Rose Water, Oud, and Itar are often the liquids that are combined (Perfume). These ingredients are of the highest quality, but they can be very expensive—up to thousands of Saudi Riyals. People frequently express their rage toward those taking part in the Kabah Wash. They believe it violates Haram’s regulations when security personnel bar local pilgrims from participating and only high-ranking officials do. Since there are always at least 1000 people present, it would be impossible for everyone to participate in the wash if security and crowd control were taken into consideration.

If they do, Allah forbids, catastrophes like a stampede, which can quickly spiral out of control, could happen. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques devised a solution to this issue by inviting all the ambassadors of all Muslim countries to partake in the wash. This wash is then concluded as though every citizen of every Muslim nation and community had participated. The day of the Ghusl (washing) has traditionally fallen on or around 15 Muharram; in the past, a second wash took place in the month of Shaban, but that practice has since been stopped.

The day begins with the guards forming a circle to keep the general people away from the Kaabah. Next, the Imams and Muadhins of Masjid Al Haram invited senior citizens and foreigners, and special guests who have been invited by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to visit the Kabah. Around 10 AM the Governor of Makkah, the President of the Haramain arrive and first pray two Rakah tahiyatul in the masjid, pray then wash the Kaabah. Washing the Kaabah takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes. The authorities perform Tawaf around the Kaabah after the wash.

Tawaf is performed by circumnavigating the Kaabah seven times counterclockwise. To finish the Rukn of the Tawaaf, they offer two Rakats prayers behind the Station of Ibrahim. The officials are given Zamzam water in a bowl as per the Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH). The Ceremony then comes to an end.
