Saudi Arabia Mandates USB-C Ports for Universal Connectivity in All Electronic Devices

Saudi Arabia has announced a new law requiring charging outlets on all electronic devices to be the same. The first stage of adoption is set to start on January 1st, 2025, and requires that all devices must follow the USB-C standard.

Government officials have stated that this program intends to increase user satisfaction, reduce costs and electronic waste, and facilitate high-quality data transfers.

The directive is the result of cooperation between the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization. Mobile phones and many other electronic devices, including keyboards, speakers, routers, and similar devices, will be included in the implementation’s initial phase. On April 1, 2026, a new phase will start, expanding its application to include laptops and portable PCs. According to these organizations’ estimates, consumers stand to save almost $45 million while reducing the annual consumption of chargers by over 2.2 million units.

The action was taken shortly after the European Union required USB-C ports for all devices sold in Europe, starting in 2023. This is the fundamental reason the impending iPhone 15 series, a range that has used Lightning or other ports for more than a decade, is being compelled to use USB-C this year. Companies in Saudi Arabia, however, will not have to switch to USB-C connectors for smartphones and other tiny devices until 2025, in contrast to Europe. However, portable computers including laptops will be given until 2026 to accomplish the same.
