Resolution in the iPhone Slowdown Saga: Users Receive $92.17 Compensation

After a prolonged wait, individuals who experienced issues during the notorious “batterygate” incident of 2017 are now being compensated, marking the resolution of this controversial episode in Apple’s history.

Recent reports indicate that those affected by the deliberate slowing down of older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7, due to aging batteries, are seeing financial settlements in their bank accounts. This brings an end to the contentious batterygate saga that commenced in 2017 when a developer revealed that certain iOS 10 updates were intentionally affecting the performance of these older iPhone models. Initially, Apple remained silent about the purpose behind these measures, causing widespread speculation and frustration among users. Later, Apple acknowledged that intentionally slowing down older iPhones was a deliberate measure aimed at preventing random shutdowns caused by deteriorating batteries.

This admission led to a series of class-action lawsuits against the tech company, with users contending that Apple’s actions compelled them to prematurely upgrade their devices rather than opt for a battery replacement. In 2020, Apple reached a settlement to address the legal disputes related to the battery slowdown issue. By August of that year, a law firm representing users in the lawsuit confirmed the resolution of all legal hurdles, clearing the path for the distribution of settlements. Compensation was provided to individuals who submitted an approved claim by October 6th, 2020. Recent information from MacRumors suggests that individuals impacted by the batterygate issue are starting to receive settlement payments in their bank accounts. The payments, totaling $92.17, mark the conclusion of a lengthy legal dispute. Despite initial expectations of a $65 payment, affected users are now obtaining a more substantial compensation.

The batterygate problem affected various iPhone models, including the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, and the original iPhone SE. Users who encountered performance slowdowns on these devices were eligible to file claims, and now they are witnessing the resolution of their concerns. With settlements being deposited into the accounts of those affected by batterygate, the era of Apple intentionally slowing down older iPhones is coming to an end. This resolution not only provides financial compensation to impacted users but also underscores the significance of transparency and accountability in the technology industry. As consumers increasingly advocate for fairness and clarity from tech giants, the aftermath of batterygate sets a precedent for holding companies responsible for their actions.
