Remembering Gul Hassan Kalmati, Renowned Historian From Sindh

Well-known historian and author Gul Hassan Kalmati passed away in Karachi following a protracted illness.

In his circle, the 66-year-old historian, known as a “living encyclopedia,” was buried in his hometown of Arzi Khan Baloch, which is a suburb of Karachi. A widow, a daughter, and seven boys remain to carry on his legacy.

There were thousands of people from all walks of life for the historian’s burial, including civil society activists, politicians, supporters, friends, and family. Writing about Karachi’s history in great detail, particularly about the city’s geography, culture, communities, architecture, and coast, made Kalmati a well-known author.

In Sindhi, Urdu, and English, at least 13 of his novels have been published. “Coastal Islands of Sindh,” “Immoral Characters of Karachi,” “Karachi Ja Lafani Kirdar,” “Sindh Ja Samoondi Bhet,” and others. Some of his most well-known books include “Karachi: Sindh Ji Marui,” “Karachi Jon Rehaishi Scheemon,” “The Impact of Urban Construction on Women’s Livelihood,” and others. Dr. Ayoob Shaikh, one of his acquaintances, said of him, “Kalmati was a thorough gentleman and did a great job writing Karachi’s history.” He went on to say that “he rewrote Karachi’s history in the true sense and looked into the truth.” Dr. Shaikh stated that he was an excellent researcher, and everything he produced was the result of his dedication and diligence.

Senior doctors have been caring for Kalmati for the past four months as per the orders of the Sindh government. The historian, who resigned about six years ago, had previously worked for the local government division of the government of Sindh. Senior writer Riaz Sohail claimed that while working for the government, he contributed to the Sindhi daily newspaper Awami Awaz by writing stories.

He stated, “He wrote what was absolutely ignored. “He discussed Karachi’s native population in his writing. He wrote about the fishing communities and their culture, as well as the architecture of Karachi,” the man said. Citing one of his works, Sohail added, “His findings are very interesting.” He added that Kalmati’s writing should be studied by individuals who wish to learn more about Karachi.
