Release of El Chapo’s Wife from US Prison Makes Headlines

The wife of the Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was sentenced to nearly two years in jail in the US on charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering, a prison official announced on Wednesday.

After entering a guilty plea to charges relating to her husband’s drug empire in November 2021, Coronel was given a three-year prison term. Four years of probationary release and a $1.5 million forfeiture were also part of her punishment. Randilee Giamusso, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP), confirmed in an email to CNN that Emma Coronel Aispuro was freed from their custody on September 13, 2023.

She said, “For reasons of privacy, security, and safety, the FBOP does not provide additional information on persons who are no longer in our custody.” The prison bureau’s inmate locator revealed that Coronel was housed in a residential reentry management facility in Long Beach, California. Coronel, a dual citizen of the US and Mexico, expressed sincere regret for her connection with Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel and any harm she may have caused during her sentencing. Guzman, who twice attempted to escape from prison in Mexico, was found guilty in 2019 of running a criminal enterprise, selling drugs, and possessing a handgun.

He is currently serving a life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax prison. The prosecution described him as the “ruthless and vicious boss” of the Sinaloa cartel. US officials stated that the Biden administration imposed sanctions on individuals associated with the cartel, which continues to operate, in February. These measures were taken due to their participation in the illicit and lethal trade of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
