Record-Breaker Rohit Sharma: Most World Cup Centuries in Ind vs Afg Clash

As a result of his explosive century against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Indian captain Rohit Sharma passed a significant threshold and now holds the record for the most hundreds ever scored in a World Cup.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the 36-year-old right-handed batsman took Afghanistan’s bowlers to task and hit his sixth World Cup century in just 19 innings of the major competition. Sharma, the Master Blaster, struck six centuries in 44 World Cup innings, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record for the most World Cup hundreds. Tendulkar is a senior Indian cricketer. The Indian captain also broke the record for the most sixes hit in a single innings of international cricket.

Chris Gayle of the West Indies, who scored 553 sixes in 551 innings, has been surpassed by Sharma, who has compiled an astounding 555 maximums in only 473 innings. The “Hitman” is known for hitting 77 sixes during Test matches, 296 during ODIs, and 182 during T20 matches. In international cricket, he is notable for being the batter with the fastest 550 sixes. The man with the third-highest number of sixes in ODI cricket is Rohit, though. The only two players with more maximums than the 36-year-old in the 50-over format are Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (351 sixes) and Gayle (331 sixes).

“The pitch for batting was good,” Rohit stated following the presentation of the player-of-the-match trophy. “I was backing myself to play my natural game. I have to provide the team with a strong start to the best of my abilities. It’s something I’ve been doing for a long time and have a strong passion for,” he remarked.

It’s worth mentioning that when batting first, Afghanistan established a target of 273 runs for India, primarily due to a remarkable 121-run partnership between their captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai, with Shahidi contributing 80 runs and Omarzai adding 62. Jasprit Bumrah stood out among the bowlers for the home team with an impressive 4-39 performance in his 10 overs, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya was the second-highest wicket-taker, claiming 2 wickets.
