Reaction of international media on Sialkot incident

On Friday, a Sri Lankan national working as a manager at a private plant on Sialkot’s Wazirabad Road was tortured to death by a mob over blasphemy claims, it was termed “a day of shame” by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Priyantha Kumara, the factory manager in charge of production, was recognised.

According to District Police Officer Omar Saeed Malik, the factory workers severely abused him, resulting in his death.

According to the authorities, the workers allegedly vandalised the factory and impeded traffic. A large detachment of police arrived at the scene after receiving a report of the event and attempted to contain the situation.

Now There is extreme wave of anger and sorrow on this shameful act and even international political personalities are sharing their anger on social media.

Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Wendy Gilmour called it “a day of great sorrow”.

“I trust the perpetrators will be brought to justice, and I hope the hate, ignorance and callous disregard for human decency that led to this incident will also be addressed,” she said.

European Union’s ambassador in Islamabad Androulla Kaminara called the lynching a “horrific attack”.

“The immediate reaction by the prime minister and the announcement that those responsible will be brought to justice is very welcome,” she said.

According to Aljazera “Few issues are as galvanising in Pakistan as blasphemy, and even the slightest suggestion of an insult to Islam can supercharge protests and incite lynchings”.

According to famous site The Guardian “Pakistan, an Islamic state, has notoriously draconian laws against blasphemy, which carry the death sentence. The laws are often used against religious minorities and those accused are sometimes lynched before they are proven guilty in a court. The culture of fear around blasphemy cases means judges are often too afraid to find the accused anything other than guilty.”

PM Imran Khan promised to bring all those involved in the incident to the book in a tweet on Twitter.
