Rare and Precious: World’s ‘Most Valuable’ Whisky Set to Shine at Auction

Auction house Sotheby’s has announced that a bottle of single malt whisky from The Macallan distillery will be up for auction next month, with a potential sale price of up to £1.2 million.

They stated that the most sought-after Scotch whisky is The Macallan 1926. This was confirmed when a comparable bottle fetched a record-breaking £1.5 million in sales in 2019. This recent sale will mark the first time a bottle from the same cask has been offered for auction since then. After being distilled in 1926, the cask matured for 60 years in sherry casks before being released in 1986. Only 40 bottles were produced, with some allegedly reserved for Macallan’s most prestigious customers rather than being made available for purchase.

Throughout the years, whenever one of these bottles has appeared at auction, the results have been astonishing. With an estimated value of between £750,000 and £1.2 million, the Macallan Adami 1926 will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on November 18. “Everyone wants to own and every auctioneer wants to sell the Macallan 1926 whisky,” said Jonny Fowle, head of spirits at Sotheby’s worldwide headquarters. “Since we set the record for this vintage four years ago, I can’t wait to bring a bottle to a Sotheby’s auction.” According to Sotheby’s, the 40 bottles from the 1926 cask have various labels. A maximum of 14 were adorned with recognizable Fine and Rare labels, one of which was the bottle that set sales records in 2019.

Two bottles were distributed without any labels at all. One of these was hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon. It was the first whisky bottle to sell for more than £1 million when it was released in 2018. Twelve of the remaining bottles had labels created by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, and another twelve had designs created by Italian painter Valerio Adami. It’s unknown how many of the twelve bottles of The Macallan Adami 1926 that were made still remain. At least one is believed to have been opened and consumed, while another is reported to have been destroyed in the 2011 earthquake in Japan.
