Race Among Meteorite Hunters For a $25k bounty

The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum in Bethel, Maine has offered a reward of $25,000 (£19,986) to anyone who can submit a piece of a meteorite that fell close to the US-Canada border in April.

The fireball was seen shooting through the sky above the US state of Maine four days earlier, prompting the museum to offer a reward. The $1,000 award is available to both Americans and Canadians and is prepared to purchase any additional meteorite rock fragments found in connection with the incident. Locals and experienced meteorite hunters alike have been inspired by the prize, but the quest has so far proven to be challenging and futile. Roberto Vargas, a Connecticut resident who has been looking for meteorites since 2019, said he has attempted to search for a meteorite in the area twice but found the terrain to be difficult.

Mr. Vargas told the BBC that the area was “heavily forested and extremely muddy.” He continued by saying that other people have been searching since April but have not yet turned up anything. In the hopes of striking it lucky, Mr. Vargas does want to come back and seek once more. He claimed that handling a rare rock from space is the best feeling ever after quitting their day job to pursue meteorite hunting full-time. He has already traveled to France, Germany, and Costa Rica on his hunts. The ability to board an aircraft, travel, and hold a fragment of a meteorite that was in space just five or six days prior is absurd, according to Mr. Vargas. There is no emotion like it.

The museum stated at the time that the incident was witnessed in broad daylight. The head of the Meteorite Division at the Main Mineral and Gem Museum, Darryl Pitt, stated that the fireball would have been incredibly bright had it occurred at night. He continued, “It would have been bright had this been happening at night when a fireball is bright enough to be seen in broad daylight.” As the fireball was coming down to earth, Mr. Pitt stated that NASA had recorded radar data of meteorites falling from the sky.

Trophy Hunting Permit price Increased in Pakistan to $25,000

This reassures us that meteorites are out there, he said. These are certain types of radar that produce velocity information about distant objects. The Maine Museum has the world’s largest collection of moon rock meteorites and is home to the 14.5-kilogram largest Martian meteorite on Earth.
