Punjab Government Eases Uniform Code Restrictions for Schools

Due to the severe cold weather, the Punjab School Education Department has made adjustments to the uniform policy for educational institutions across the province.

The highest authority overseeing schools has communicated via a letter to district education authorities, instructing them to adhere to the modified guidelines concerning the uniform code. The directive specifies that, during January and February, public and private schools are exempt from enforcing the usual uniform code. This relaxation allows schoolchildren to wear any warm clothing such as sweaters, coats, jackets, caps, socks, or shoes instead of strictly adhering to the standard uniform code throughout the winter season.

All heads of public and private schools have been mandated to implement this new rule. The issuance of this updated directive followed the temporary closure of regular classes for students in grade one and below for a week. Additionally, examinations for grades 1-10 have been postponed. These measures were taken in response to the unfortunate deaths of 36 children in Punjab attributed to pneumonia. Yesterday, Mohsin Naqvi, the acting Chief Minister of Punjab, declared a one-week suspension of classes for students in grade one and below. Citing a high incidence of pneumonia among children, he urged schools to eliminate morning assemblies and prevent unwell students from attending classes.

The chief minister also emphasized the importance of vaccinating both children and the elderly against pneumonia. This decision was made as schools in the province reopened after winter vacations that started on December 18, 2023. Additionally, the provincial government adjusted school timings, with classes starting at 9:30 am from January 10 to January 22, considering the ongoing cold weather conditions.

To account for the persistent cold weather, the provincial school education department had previously extended the winter holidays for public and private educational institutions until January 9.
