The Punjab government has announced that people with fertility problems would be able to receive free test-tube babies, also known as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), at a public facility.
Punjab will be the first province in Pakistan to offer a test tube baby facility at the government level free of cost.

The IVF technique is already available at a number of private facilities across Pakistan, but this is the first time the government has made it available to the general people at no cost. According to Rashid, the medical institution will treat those who are experiencing pregnancy challenges owing to physiological or reproductive issues.
In the IVF technique, the baby develops as an embryo in a regulated glass jar before being implanted into the mother’s womb.
Although the notion of a test-tube baby, also known as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), is not new, it has not been widely used in Pakistan due to high costs. It aids patients with infertility issues and allows millions of people to become parents.
The operation will be available at the Punjab government’s Mother & Child Hospital in Lahore. The 600-bed facility will open in June 2022, and Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate it in june.
This would be Pakistan’s first gynaecology department to offer IVF, according to Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid.
“It will treat pregnancy complications whether due to physiological or reproductive issues,” she said.
The Federal Shariat Court ruled in 2017 that IVF operations for married couples conceiving children are legal.
The court had concluded that “this practise cannot be considered illegal or contrary to the Injunctions of the Holy Quran and Sunnah.”
