Political Showdown: PTI’s Sanam Javed Takes on Maryam Nawaz in Upcoming Elections

Sanam Javaid, a detained activist from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is set to participate in the upcoming elections against Maryam Nawaz, Senior Vice President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), for a provincial assembly seat in Lahore, according to her father’s announcement.

Sanam, along with numerous PTI members, is currently in custody related to the disturbances on May 9, triggered by the arrest of the party’s former chairman, Imran Khan, in a corruption case. She faces multiple charges, including involvement in the attack on the Corps Commander House in Lahore and the arson of police vehicles in the Cantonment area during the violent protests earlier this year.

Speaking with Geo News via phone, the PTI activist’s father stated that Sanam intends to file nomination papers for the PP-150 constituency in Lahore, aiming to participate in the general elections scheduled for February 8 next year. “He mentioned that the imprisoned activist will join the electoral race on the PTI’s ticket, and he also stated that Sanam plans to submit nomination papers for a reserved women’s seat. The father stated, ‘We are in the process of gathering the necessary documents for Sanam Javaid’s nomination papers.’ On the other hand, Maryam, a leader from the PML-N, has not yet disclosed the constituency from which she intends to contest in the elections.

The PML-N’s parliamentary board is currently conducting meetings to interview potential candidates for party ticket allocations. According to the election schedule, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to commence the acceptance of nomination papers from candidates starting tomorrow (December 20). This process is scheduled to begin after the oath-taking ceremony for district returning officers (DROs) and returning officers (ROs) conducted by the electoral body, as outlined in the Elections Act 2017.
