Palestinian Hunger Striker Dies in Israeli Detention

A well-known Palestinian prisoner named Khader Adnan passed away in Israeli captivity on Tuesday after engaging in an 86-day hunger strike.

Adnan, a prominent member of the violent Islamic Jihad organization, pioneered the long-lasting hunger strikes as a new form of protest against Israel’s widespread incarceration of Palestinians without charge or trial more than ten years ago.

The 45-year-old on Tuesday became the first prisoner on a prolonged hunger strike to pass away in Israeli captivity. Over the past year, the number of administrative detainees has increased to more than 1,000, the highest number in twenty years, as Israeli-Palestinian violence has increased.

Hunger strikes are sometimes the last resort for administrative detainees. Many people have participated in prolonged hunger strikes, frequently getting seriously ill.

In the past, Israeli governments have occasionally given in to some of their demands in order to prevent deaths while in detention. According to the advocacy group Physicians for Human Rights Israel, this time, warnings concerning Adnan’s failing health went unheeded.

Both the organization and Adnan’s attorney claimed they had asked the Israeli government to transfer Adnan from his cell to a hospital so that his illness could be better monitored. The rights organization claimed that a doctor who saw Adnan a few days prior advised that his life was in danger. Without a specific group taking credit, Palestinian groups launched at least three rockets from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli towns on Tuesday morning as retribution.

Three shells fired from the Gaza Strip were discovered by the Israel Defense Forces, who reported that the Iron Dome defense system had not been able to stop them because they all landed in an open region. Ziyad Al-Nakhala, the secretary general of Islamic Jihad, declared: “Sheikh Khader will remain a great symbol of our people, symbol of freedom fighters in the world, and a high flag in our march towards Jerusalem.” He continued, “(We) show our loyalty today to Sheikh Khader Adnan, to all the martyrs, and to those who will join the ranks of the blessed martyrs. Al-Nakhala stated, “We will not stray from the way of jihad and resistance until our land is freed from the Zionist murderers and criminals.

The leaders of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip cancelled travel plans to attend a meeting of their political bureau, according to sources cited by local Palestinian media. The sources also stated that numerous local and international parties were making an attempt to stop an escalation and a restart of a new conflict in the beleaguered area.

According to reliable sources cited by the Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds, “Islamic Jihad is still debating internally about its response amid contacts from the Arab and international community and pressures on the movement to hold off on responding.” Adnan was a native of the northern West Bank town of Arraba, Jenin. He was placed in administrative custody twelve times and had engaged in five hunger strikes since 2012.
