Pakistani Tourist Arrested in Turkiye for Carrying “Chalia – Supari”

A Pakistani tourist was arrested in Turkiye for possessing “chalia and supari,” and his family has asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to act as a mediator to secure his release.

Details indicate that Owais, a Pakistani young man, was detained in Turkiye for smuggling chalia packages. Because Owais had been the best-performing employee, his employer sent him on a trip to Turkiye. He brought two packets of chalia with him to give to the tour guide who would help him during his journey to Turkiye.

Owais’s father, Saifullah, said that his son was not aware of Turkiye’s severe drug laws, which classify chalia and supari as illegal drugs. Owais is a heart patient, and the family has already spent more than Rs1.5 million fighting for him, the speaker continued. Chalia will be transferred to the laboratory, and a report will be published in six months to determine Owais’ fate, was what we were told. Saifullah claimed that they visited the prime minister at his house in Model Town because they were neighbors, but no one heeded their pleas. He claimed that they were no longer able to pay the fees for attorneys.

He urged the foreign ministry to raise the matter with the Turkiye administration because several other persons were being investigated for similar charges and might face jail time. Saifullah begged the prime minister to assist him in getting his son released. On September 15, Owais, age 26, was detained in Turkiye; however, after sending a letter, the Pakistani Embassy declined to aid the family. It was discovered that the embassy failed to inform the public about Turkiye’s tight ban on chalia and gutka. Owais was arrested, and the embassy made a public announcement.
