Pakistani School Triumphs: Crowned Best School in South Asia, Clinches $100,000 Prize

In a notable accomplishment, a Pakistani educational institution under the management of the Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT) has achieved the esteemed Zayed Sustainability Prize, a recognition valued at $100,000, at the UN climate conference held in Dubai.

This school earned the title of the top Global School in South Asia due to its pioneering project centered on water conservation and organic farming. In a competition that included finalists from India and Bangladesh, the KORT school distinguished itself through its inventive approach to tackling challenges associated with climate issues. The award ceremony took place at Expo City in Dubai, where the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, presented this prestigious accolade.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, which pays tribute to the legacy of UAE’s founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, acknowledges the efforts of small and medium enterprises, non-profit organizations, and high schools that contribute to addressing concerns related to health, food, energy, water, and climate. Sumaiya Bibi, a 19-year-old representative from KORT, emphasized the critical nature of their water conservation initiative. She pointed out that the availability of clean drinking water in Pakistan is projected to be exhausted by 2025. Emphasizing the school’s dedication, she outlined plans to implement water filtration plants and sensor taps to reduce water wastage.

Additionally, the institution aims to create a kitchen garden through organic farming to enhance nutritional benefits. Founded in 2016 in Azad Kashmir, KORT School and College of Excellence supports over 500 orphaned children with education, boarding, food, clothing, and medical care after the 2005 earthquake. Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar, the founding chairman of the organization, disclosed that the prize money would be allocated for initiatives related to clean water and organic farming in rural areas.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, awarded to 11 winners in diverse categories this year, boasts a total prize fund of $3.6 million. These inventive solutions are designed to positively impact lives and contribute to global environmental sustainability.
