Pakistan Zoo Closure: Investigation Launched Following a Tiger Attack

A zoo in Pakistan had to be closed down when a man was fatally attacked by tigers, as revealed during a regular cleaning session, according to officials. The discovery was made on Wednesday morning at Sherbagh Zoo in Bahawalpur, located in the eastern province of Punjab.

Staff noticed one of the three tigers carrying a shoe in its mouth. Ali Usman Bukhari, a senior officer from the wildlife department overseeing the zoo, informed AFP that the zoo is presently closed as they investigate how the man gained access. The state of the body indicates that the incident occurred late on Tuesday night.

Bukhari stated that, although the autopsy report has not been disclosed, indications from the enclosure suggest that the individual was alive at the time of the tiger attack. He clarified that the tigers did not venture outside their den to assail the man; rather, he voluntarily entered their enclosure.

Bukhari emphasized a commitment to rectifying any security breaches and expressed a willingness to hire private security guards if necessary. The victim remains unidentified, with no family members having come forward to claim the body. Zaheer Anwar, a senior local government official, assured the media that all zoo staff members had been located following the discovery of the body on Wednesday.

He stated that, based on our evaluation so far, it seems irrational for someone to enter the den, as a reasonable person wouldn’t engage in such behavior. The den is well-secured, with stairs located behind it, suggesting the possibility that the individual may have jumped from there.

The three tigers present at the time of the discovery of the body have been confined to a smaller area while the collection of evidence takes place. The zoo, established in 1942 by the ruling royal family of the former princely state of Bahawalpur, charges adults 50 rupees (18 cents) for admission. Pakistan’s zoos are generally in subpar conditions and are frequently criticized for neglecting animal welfare.
