Pakistan Women Make History: Securing Series Triumph with Second T20I Win Against New Zealand

The Pakistan women’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing their inaugural T20 series win against New Zealand.

They emerged victorious by a margin of 10 runs in the second T20 match held at Dunedin, thereby taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The triumph followed their previous success, where they defeated New Zealand by seven wickets at the University of Otago Oval in Dunedin on Sunday. Notably, this earlier win marked Pakistan women’s first-ever triumph against New Zealand in a T20 encounter. In the second T20I, the Pakistani team batted first, concluding their innings at 137-6 and setting a target of 138 runs for New Zealand.

Key contributions from Fatima Sana, Muneeba Ali, and Aliya Riaz played a pivotal role in their commendable performance. The New Zealand squad wrapped up their 20 overs, achieving a total of just 127-7, leading to a 10-run loss. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) marked this historic occasion in Dunedin on social media platform X, spotlighting Fatima Sana’s outstanding bowling display, a pivotal factor in Pakistan’s impressive series triumph over New Zealand.

Sana delivered a performance of 3-22 in her four overs, Sadia Iqbal secured figures of 2-29, and Nida Dar concluded with 1-20 from her allotted four overs. Hannah Rowe was the leading run-scorer for New Zealand, contributing 33 runs off 24 balls, while Georgia Plimmer scored 28 runs at a run-a-ball pace. Pakistan achieved their highest T20 total against New Zealand, reaching 137-6. Muneeba Ali played a crucial role with 35 runs off 28 balls, and Riaz’s quickfire 32 off 22 balls earned her the Player of the Match award. Former captain Bismah Maroof added 21 runs from 26 balls.

Expressing joy and gratitude, Riaz mentioned, “We are delighted and grateful to Allah for clinching the series against the White Ferns for the first time,” during the post-match interview. Riaz expressed that the success was a result of collective teamwork, with each team member delivering outstanding performances. He mentioned Pakistan’s aim for a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand and asserted that if the team maintained the same positive attitude in the upcoming third match on Saturday, December 9, victory was assured.
