Babar Azam’s years-long tenure as captain is set to come to an end, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to remove him from the role across all formats, sources told Geo News on Tuesday night.
The decision was made following Pakistan’s subpar performance in all three facets of the game—batting, bowling, and fielding—which prevented them from progressing to the World Cup semifinals. According to the sources, if Babar chooses to resign, he will be fired by the PCB, and the board will accept his resignation.
Additionally, the sources mentioned that Shan Masood is a strong contender to lead the team in the upcoming Test series against Australia, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is a formidable candidate for the T20I series in New Zealand. According to the sources, Shaheen may captain the Green Shirts in the T20 World Cup next year.
Despite being appointed Test and white-ball captain in 2021 and 2019, respectively, the Green Shirts have not secured victory in an Asia Cup or an ICC championship under Babar’s leadership. Despite entering the World Cup as the top-ranked squad, Pakistan failed to showcase its abilities and was eliminated from the competition in the group stage. Following the World Cup disappointment for the Green Shirts, team director Mickey Arthur declared that making mistakes is not a “crime” and expressed his support for the “depressed” Babar.
The captain is scheduled to have a meeting with Zaka Ashraf, the Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, later today. An announcement regarding his captaincy is anticipated to follow the meeting.
