More than 100 students at a New Jersey high school are believed to have contracted a rare malignancy, prompting an investigation.
The disease was discovered years after these pupils had graduated or worked at Woodbridge’s Colonia High School.
After one of the former pupils, Al Lupiano, a cancer survivor, sought to unravel the riddle, the alarming development came to light. He had been diagnosed with a ‘rare’ brain tumour 20 years prior.
Lupiano started the campaign when his sister died of the sickness and his wife was diagnosed with the same type of malignant tumour, glioblastoma. She, too, passed away last month.
Glioblastoma is extremely rare, with an incidence of 3.21 per 100,000 people, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. However, Lupiano has discovered that 102 people who attended the institution between 1975 and 2000 all had the same type of brain cancer.
Officials in Woodbridge are now trying to figure out what’s causing the disease.
Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac stated in a statement quoted by the New York Post, “There could be a real problem here, and our citizens deserve to know if there are any concerns.”
“We’re all concerned, and we all want to know what’s going on. This is not at all a very common thing”The mayor went on to say in the statement to The New York Times.
The Rare problem becomes the national headlines in US after CBS News aired a story on it. It is now one of the most discussed topics on TikTok.
