Omar Khalid Makes History at the 74th US Junior Amateur Golf Championship

The best amateur golfer in Pakistan, Omar Khalid Hussain, made history on Wednesday when he qualified for the 74th US Junior Amateur Golf Championship in Bandon Dunes in Oregon, United States, for the first time.

At the windy Bandon Dune course, Omar, 18, was in fine form throughout the second and final round of stroke play as he recorded seven birdies for a fantastic total of two under par. Omar scored a two-day total of 143 thanks to his heroics after shooting 73 on Tuesday at the Bandon Trails course.

Yashal Shah, a fellow countryman of Omar’s, shot a second-round score of 77 at Bandon Dunes after shooting 75 on an opening day at Bandon Trails, dropping out of the competition to advance to the matchplay round of what is regarded as the most prestigious junior golf competition in the world. Omar finished at 48th place after shooting an even-par total of over 36 holes. To advance to match play, he was required to place among the top 64 players from 264 best-ranked juniors from 25 different countries. At 1-over-par 144, the cut for match play was made.

Omar, an A-level student at Nixor College in Karachi, shot a round of seven birdies, three bogies, and a double bogey. On holes 3, 7, 8, 10, 13, 16, and 18, he made birdies. Although the circumstances were difficult, Omar admitted that he had to play the odds to succeed. Heavy fog caused the tee-offs to be delayed for more than two hours, but once the round started, he was committed to giving it his all.

Omar will now compete against US player Caden Pinckes in round 64. Pinckes, a seasoned golfer, played brilliantly during the stroke play rounds and ended with an overall score of 138 (-5). Omar has changed the course of history by reaching the round of 64. The United States Golf Association (USGA) duly emphasized this fact on its official website.

The first golfer from Pakistan to cut was 18-year-old, Omar Khalid Hussain. Hussain finished with an even-par score of 143 in the British Amateur this year. At age 16, he won the Pakistan Amateur two years ago as the youngest winner ever, the USGA published on its website. The USGA is home to several important competitions, including the US Open.

US Keaton Vo won the medal by recording the highest overall score throughout the stroke play portion of the competition. Defending champion Nick Dunlap of the US advanced to match play after shooting a 71 at Bandon Dunes for a 36-hole total of 141. Luke Potter and Luke Clanton, who placed in the semifinals the previous year, both qualified with scores of 138 and 142, respectively.
