Nisha Rao – Pakistan’s first transgender gets admission in LL.M. at Karachi University

KARACHI –

Pakistan’s first transgender lawyer named Nisha Rao gets admission in Karachi university. She has etched the name in the annals of history as the 28-year-old gets admission in a MPhil equivalent programme, becoming the first from the marginalized community in the South Asian country to reach the postgraduate academic level.

Rao has earlier garnered a lot of attention after the proud Pakistani went from begging on roads to becoming the country’s first transgender lawyer.

Recently, the activist made headlines after getting admission in LLM, a degree related to law studies, at the University of Karachi.

Rao, who got a law degree from the Sindh Muslim Government Law College in 2020, told a news outlet that she had been recently informed about the admission at KU’s law school while she had taken the entry test around four months ago.

Reports in local media quoting the public relations office of Karachi University cited that Pakistani lawyer is the first transgender student to get admission in any program since the university’s inception.

Trans Pride Society, an NGO for the rights of transgender people, also shared the proud moment on its official handle. “A momentous day! Nisha Rao, Founder, and President of Trans Pride Society were admitted to the University of Karachi for their Master of Laws Program (LLM)”, the caption reads.

The post further added “Nisha is the first member of the transgender community to study Law at Karachi University. Nisha hopes she inspires her community members to strive to reach their goals with unfaltering faith, even if they are faced with resolute opposition at times, as she did. Nisha wishes those wanting to achieve their goals great perseverance, determination, and resilience, and thanks to everyone for their support in her journey!

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of Karachi Uni. Prof. Dr. Khalid Iraqi while speaking with a news outlet told that a meeting of the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) took the decision to admit Rao after evaluating her application.

The varsity does not have policies to facilitate transgender students, be it against harassment or any other difficulties, while Rao will be offered ‘institutional support’ to facilitate her journey in every way possible, he added.

Furthermore, Rao has not been awarded a scholarship for the LLM as the university offers no scholarships specifically for students from the transgender community.

Let it be known that Rao, who hailed from Lahore, ran away from home at a tender age and eventually arrived in the Sindh capital where the activist was forced to begging on the streets for survival.

Earlier, Rao revealed that she was told to beg or become a sex worker to survive, while she used to beg to pay for law classes and beating odds, Rao earned a law degree, gaining her law license in 2020, and joining the Karachi Bar Association.
