In a first, Punjab opens transgender-only school in Multan

MULTAN: Trans members on Thursday (today) attended the first of its kind of school in Multan established under Transeducation – a pilot project of the incumbent government to provide quality education to the trasngenders.

Reports in local media cited that first of its kind of educational institution offers classes from nursery till intermediate while the course outline from nursery till primary was set by Japanese officials, while the Pakistani curriculum will be taught from the middle till intermediate.

The special school which goes by the name, Government Comprehensive School, was inaugurated Wednesday by the secretary of School education of South Punjab Dr. Ehtisham. now, a minimum of 18 transgenders has enrolled within the school that aimed to teach Trans members with no harassment at all.

Four of the groups have been formed for the students including primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary while the classes will be commenced from 4 pm to 6 pm on a day to day basis.

Provincial Education Minister Dr. Murad Raas also shared the development on his official handle. “First Day of School for Transgenders by School Education Department Punjab. We have provided them everything that’s required for Schooling. Dr. Aithesham Secretary School South Punjab and his team have done a great job. TransEducation is the program”, the caption reads.

Besides facilitating in academics, the officials also provided a pick and drop service, uniforms, and books to students further to motivate the students to urge modern-day education with no troubles.

Secretary School education while speaking at the inauguration also announced to roll out a further vocational training program for Trans members including hairdressing, makeup, tailoring, and cooking courses. “This will not just educate these members of our society but will increase livelihood and business opportunities for them as well, he opined.

Meanwhile, educated transgender faculty has been hired to teach the students while it aimed to volunteer teachers from the same institution to teach others. The officials also announced to establish similar institutions in the country’s most populous province likewise.

The Punjab government will establish separate schools for the transgender community in selected cities of the province and also the first of its kind are going to be established in Multan very soon, Education Minister Dr. Murad Raas announced on Tuesday..

Raas while speaking in a very ceremony said that the govt. had decided to not enroll transgender persons in regular schools thanks to reservations regarding the harassment issues. The attitude of students of normal schools might be insulting towards the transgender community, which is why separate schools would be established for them. No previous government had thought of the welfare and provision of this neglected community.

He also expressed the hope that a large number of Trans members children would be enrolled in schools in order to get the best education.

In 2019, the Punjab government established a school for transgender persons in Lodhran city under its Literacy Department while Senate had unanimously approved a bill on March 7, 2018, for the protection of rights of transgender people, empowering them to work out their own individuality.
