Nicaragua has announced cutting ties with Taiwan and turned towards China, establishing formal diplomatic relations.
The decision landed Taiwan into further international isolation as only 14 governments across the world formally recognize it as a country. The announcement also validates Beijing’s claim over Taiwan as a Chinese province rather than a separate country, a dispute that simmers tensions in the region.

In a statement, Nicaraguan foreign ministry said the government of the Republic of Nicaragua has cut off diplomatic ties with Taiwan and ceases to have any contact or official relationship. It added that the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government that constitutes entire China and Taiwan is an absolute part of the Chinese territory.
Following the decision, the Nicaraguan government diplomatically recognized the ‘One China’ policy. A formal ceremony to sign a communiqué was held in the Chinese city of Tianjin to reestablish ties with China.
Beijing seeks to reunify Taiwan with the mainland and has lately escalated pressure to wean away Taipei’s allies. The United States officially recognizes one Chinese government.
The U.S. and Taiwan have established greater ties lately, as both countries conducted formal dialogues for greater economic relations in November.
