News anchor booked for sedition on Gutka seller’s complaint

Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan was booked on sedition allegations in Thatta, Sindh, on Sunday.

Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan is in hot waters as two FIRs have been registered against him.

Aashiq Ali Qureshi, a gutka seller, has been identified as the complainant from Thatta Sindh.

Ironically, Qureshi has a checkered criminal history.

Sections 131 (inciting mutiny), 153 (causing riot), 452 (trespassing), and 505 (statement conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code apply to Imran Riaz Khan (PPC).

The complainant said Imran Riaz Khan was “fuming” on social media about the army and state institutions in “derogatory and aggressive language.”

“I am a patriotic citizen who is startled and wounded by how anchor Imran Riaz Khan has spoken out against the Pakistan Army and state institutions on social media,” the FIR stated.

Meanwhile, according to media sources, between 2015 and 2022, at least eleven complaints relating to selling hazardous chewing tobacco were made against the complainant himself in various police stations.

Section 270 of the Pakistan Penal Code (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease hazardous to life) and Section 269 of the Pakistan Penal Code have been filed against him (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life).

According to the media sources, a case has been filed against him under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to prevent a public officer from performing his duties). In addition, the complainant failed to include his full address and phone number in the FIR.

Bol TV anchor Asad Kharal, who opened fire at police personnel, held them hostage sent to jail on judicial remand

Authorities who wish to search his home can do so, but they should not misbehave with his family, he said in a video statement broadcast on Sunday. From an undisclosed place, he sent out a video message. Riaz claims that he has urged his family to cooperate with the authorities. If they target or abuse the family, Riaz vowed he would name them.

The purported bogus cases against Imran Riaz Khan and other journalists, Arshad Sharif and Sami Ibrahim, have been criticised by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
