Moeen Ali Penalized: ICC Imposes 25% Match Fee Fine for Rule Violation

The International Cricket Council (ICC) fined English all-rounder Moeen Ali 25% of his match earnings for breaking the Code of Conduct while the first Test match against Australia was still in progress at Edgbaston.

Moeen, 36, violated Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel by acting in a manner that was contrary to the rules of the game. During the 89th over of Australia’s opening innings, an incident took place involving the all-rounder who was seen fielding while applying a “drying agent” to his bowling hand. The 36-year-old recognized his mistake and took the punishment Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees had to offer.

One or two demerit points, an official reprimand, and a maximum fine of 50% of the player’s match fee are the minimum and maximum penalties for level 1 violations. Earlier, Moeen talked about his discussion with England captain Ben Stokes and how a single message convinced him to come out of retirement and participate in the Ashes. According to the 36-year-old, only Stokes could have convinced him to resume his Test career. Further, Moeen said that Stokes was making a joke and that he was unaware of the news of Jack Leach’s injuries.

I spoke with him when the news was received, he added. “That was the end. The Ashes. It would be amazing to participate in it. Moeen is playing for England in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, where he scored 18 off 17 in the first innings while batting and claimed two crucial wickets of Travis Head and Cameroon Green.
