Mob sets Charsadda police station on fire for not handing over person accused of blasphemy

A furious mob has attacked and set a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district on fire after the authorities refused to hand over a man held for allegedly desecrating Holy Quran.

Provincial Law Minister Fazal Shakoor Khan, who also belonged to Charsadda, said the accused was shifted to the Mandani police station in Charsadda’s Tangi tehsil.

He added that the charged mob had also vandalized the vehicles in the police station premises. He said the accused will be dealt according to law.

Confirming the attack, Peshawar Commissioner Riaz Mehsud said there were at least 4 to 5,000 people who attacked the police station.

After the attack, the crowd staged a sit-in on Harichand Road but they were later dispersed after the local administration held talks with them. Police had also resorted to tear-gas and aerial firing to disperse the demonstrators.
