After Lionel Messi left without the club’s approval to visit Saudi Arabia, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has fined him and suspended him for two weeks.
The Argentine football star will be unable to practice or participate in the next games between PSG and Troyes and Ajaccio due to the suspension. Messi allegedly asked for permission to travel for business purposes but was turned down. The voyage to the Middle Eastern nation was nevertheless carried out.
PSG made the decision to discipline him as a result. Due to his two-year contract expiring this summer, questions have been raised about Messi’s future with PSG as a result of the club’s decision to suspend him. The fact that Messi was suspended demonstrates PSG’s commitment to a zero-tolerance disciplinary policy and its desire to assemble a team around younger players.
He won’t have his contract renewed, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Messi was benched after playing the entire game against Lorient for PSG on Sunday at home. With five games remaining in the Ligue 1 season, PSG leads the standings by five points and is aiming to win their ninth league championship in 11 years.
But despite rumors that Barcelona is trying to bring Messi back to the Nou Camp, it appears that the future of the player lies elsewhere. A greater degree of flexibility for Barcelona’s Financial Fair Play ratio is apparently being discussed with LaLiga.
Messi is expected to play his final season of European football this year, therefore the club hopes to give him a contract this summer and bring him back to Barcelona. The club will need to let players go in order to make place for Messi’s return, though, as they have used up all of their available finances.
Messi has been reportedly been given a one-year contract worth £400 million to play for Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. But it’s not clear if their offer had anything to do with his most recent trip to Saudi Arabia. Messi already serves as the nation’s ambassador to the Middle Eastern tourism market.
